Artificial intelligence is learning to detect changes on the Sun before they become visible. A NASA research team has developed a machine-learning model capable of predicting the emergence of active regions on the Sun up to 12 hours before they appear.
The research could eventually improve space weather forecasting and provide additional warning time for satellites, spacecraft, astronauts, and future missions traveling beyond Earth.
AI Looks Beneath the Visible Surface of the Sun
The new model was developed by researchers working with NASA’s COFFIES — Consequence Of Fields and Flows in the Interior and Exterior of the Sun — DRIVE Science Center.
Instead of waiting for a sunspot or active region to become clearly visible, the machine-learning system analyzes subtle patterns associated with changes occurring before an active region emerges.
These active regions are areas where intense concentrations of magnetic fields emerge through the solar surface. They are important because they are associated with sunspots and can become the source of powerful space weather events, including solar flares and coronal mass ejections.
Up to 12 Hours of Advance Warning
According to NASA, the COFFIES machine-learning model can predict the emergence of active regions on the Sun up to 12 hours before they appear.
This does not mean that artificial intelligence can already predict every individual solar flare 12 hours in advance. Instead, the system can identify regions where potentially significant solar activity is beginning to emerge.
That distinction is important. By identifying these regions earlier, scientists may gain additional information that can complement existing space weather forecasting systems.
Why Space Weather Matters
The Sun is not a static star. Its magnetic environment is constantly changing, and powerful solar events can send radiation and charged particles through space.
Space weather can affect satellites, spacecraft operations, radio communications and other technological systems. It is also particularly important for astronauts who travel beyond the protection provided by much of Earth’s magnetic environment.
NASA notes that better monitoring and forecasting of solar activity will become increasingly important as human exploration expands toward the Moon and eventually Mars.
Artificial Intelligence as a New Tool for Exploring the Cosmos
The research represents a broader change in the way humanity studies space.
Artificial intelligence can examine enormous streams of scientific observations and recognize subtle patterns that may be difficult to identify through conventional analysis alone.
In this case, AI is not replacing astronomers or solar physicists. It is becoming another instrument in their scientific toolkit — helping researchers detect signals, compare patterns and potentially recognize important changes earlier.
As humanity prepares for longer journeys beyond Earth, technologies capable of understanding the environment between planets may become just as important as the spacecraft themselves.
